Dave's Zenith 601XL Aircraft Kit
This website will chronicle the construction of my Zenith 601XL experimental aircraft. It will also serve to journalize the construction, a requirement of the FAA for all home-built experimental aircraft. Most of the construction of the plane, including the engine, a converted 1964 Chevrolet Corvair engine, will take place in my garage. This will be the first airplane I've built. The all-metal, two-seat design features a low wing and bubble canopy, as well as tricycle gear, a "glass" cockpit, and extra-large fuel tanks. Zenith's ZODIAC XL factory demonstrator is powered by a six cylinder Jabiru 3300, a 110-hp aircraft engine from Australia. My plane will utilize a 6 cylinder Corvair engine, producing 100 hp. "Since its introduction in 1984, the Zodiac CH601 series has become very popular with first-time builders and low-time pilots" says Chris Heintz, the designer of the plane. "The XL model is designed to achieve maximum performance and efficiency with the new generation engines, including the Corvair."Please return often! This web site, much like the airplane, is in a constant state of construction.
