Building the Rudder Kit
Before taking the big leap, and ordering the complete kit
from Zenith, I took advantage of a "try it first" offer. For $300, I
ordered a complete rudder kit, that includes everything needed to build the
rudder for the 601XL. By doing this, I can see if I'm really ready to
tackle building a metal airplane. This will give me an introduction to
working with the sheet metal; cutting, riveting, and all of the other skills
necessary in completing the airplane.

The kit with all of the parts comes nicly packed in a wooden crate. The open crate, showing parts, packing, and paperwork. Instructions, cleco clamps, snips, stuff. Inventory complete. All of the parts for the rudder are shown here, except for the outer skins which are still in the shipping crate to protect them. Each part has a label which gives the part number.
parts deburred, and labels removed. I cleaned the parts Alumaprep 33, and them primed them with Zinc Oxide. Better not corode! The bottom of the long rib and the top of the short rib (top of photo) are not primed since they will be exposed when the rudder is finished. They will be primed and painted with the rest of the aircraft exterior. The skin is marked and ready for drilling. 4,576,298 holes. Seemed like it, but actiuly only 176. Here the skins have been drilled and clecoed to the spar. The leading edge skin is drilled and clecoed to the nose rib. Roughing out the upper rudder bearings. Rudder assembly complete! Bring on the rest of the kit. This is fun!
