Lesson # 2

Log Entry

5-24-06 - Cessna 150 - N2966V - From AEG to AEG - 2 day landings -1.4 hrs - Slow flight, stalls, turns- Wendell Gunthorpe, CFI

Today I flew a Cessna 150.  This is the oldest plane in Bode's fleet, and even has a nick-name: "Piglet".   After I did the walk-around, I taxied (not very well) to the run-up area, and finished the checklist.  We took off on runway 4, and proceeded to the NW practice area.  Wendell first showed me slow flight.  flaps down, noise high, and flying at slower than 40 knots.  We then worked on stalls - both power-off and power-on stalls.  He than demonstrated an "incipient spin", where the plane goes from a nose-high position, through a stall, and starts spinning down, with the nose pointing at the ground.  Then he pulled out, and the G's were really something.  I found the maneuver very un-pleasant, and felt queasy after that. He then had me do a simulated engine out, and showed that the plane still files quite well.  We then started to do turns-around-a-point, and the spinning motion and looking at a point on the ground was just too much - I started to get sick.  So he flew the plane back to AEG, and as I was feeling a bit better, landed, did a "stop-and-go", and I took off.  Turning in the pattern brought the queasiness back, and this time I lost it.  Breakfast, that is.  So we landed, and parked the plane back on the ramp.  Wendell suggested that I eat some ginger snaps (cookies) before the next flight.  We did our post-flight, and Wendell gave me a quick tour of the old West Mesa Air facility that Bode has acquired.  They are going to almost double their facility, and add several more aircraft to their fleet.  Good to see that things are going well.

Check back soon for the continuing adventures of Dave's flight training.
