July 15, 1996Day 7 - Beaubien Lay OverIt's hard to believe that we've been at Philmont Scout Ranch for a week already. Today's our lay over day, and that's just what I did... lay around. Most of us slept in, and some didn't get up until after 8 AM. I did a few chores, like washing clothes, airing things out, etc. I read, worked on my journal, and wandered around the area. At 10 AM, I went to the branding area, where you can brand your boots, your hat, or just about anything else you have. I had brought along a patch of leather to brand, and then I plan to attach it to my backpack. At the same time 5 of our guys went on a side hike to Trail Peak. The big attraction there is the chance to "pee off of the wing of an airplane at 10,000 Ft." There is a wreck of a B-24 at the top of the mountain, and our guys all participated! Those of us who stayed behind played horseshoes after lunch. The other guys got back from Trail Peak at 1:45 PM. The rest of the afternoon was spent in the normal manner, playing cards, reading, or in my case, watching clouds blow by. At 5:30 PM we went to our chuck wagon dinner. Beef stew, crackers, drink, and hot peaches for desert. The meal was real tasty, and sure beat the trail food we'd been eating. We then went back to the camp and spent the evening talking & playing games. At bedtime, John and I played the old "snake under the bed" trick on Marshall D. We had the help of his tent mate, Scott E. It worked great, and I got a couple of photos. Tomorrow, Fish Camp. On To Day Eight...
