Trek '96 - Postscript
July 23, 1997. It's been a year now since Trek '96. None of the guys have been back to Philmont, as far as I know. Troop 381 has reservations for two crews in 1999. Here is an update of what the all of us have been doing in the past year, to the best of my knowledge. Boys Patrick B. - Pat is still at Life rank. He got his driver's license, and is a terror on wheels! He will be a high school Senior in the fall, and is still active in Troop 381. Scott C. - Scott turned 18, and graduated from high school in May. He'll be going to school in Washington state in the Fall, on a full music scholarship. Scott signed up as an ASM with Troop 381, and will be working with the boys as time permits. Scott is a fine young man, and one I'm proud to know. Marshall D. - Marshall has been busy with swimming at his high school, and has been attending Explorer Post 14 (a "Ship"). He went to the Bahamas' Sea Base in the Spring. We don't see much of him at the Troop meetings anymore, but I understand from his "Skipper" that he's doing quite well in the ship! Scott E. - Scott, like Marshall, is busy with swimming, the Ship, and girls! Scott also went on the Bahamas' trip, where and his girl friend got married! (But only while on board the ship. The marriage became null and void when they got back to port!) Scott is also very busy with O/A, where he got his Vigil Honor, and recently became the new Lodge Chief with Lodge 66, Yah-Tah-Hey-Si-Kess. Scott also attended the National Jamboree, and served as an ASPL with Jamboree Troop 735. Scott pops into Troop meeting once in a while. What a guy! Matt F. - Matt dropped out of Troop 381 and Scouting right after we returned from Philmont last year. No one in the Troop seems to know where he is, or what he is doing. Too bad. Brett G. - Brett is still active in the Troop, and he became our SPL in the Spring. He's doing a great job at that, in spite of some negative remarks he keeps getting from several adult members of the Troop. Brett is going to do his Eagle project in August, and should be an Eagle before the year is out. Mike J. - Mike turned 18 in November of '96, but 3 days before, he passed his Eagle board! He had his Eagle court of honor in June of '97. Mike is attending UNM, and working with the Troop as time permits. Adults Matt B. - Matt finished his Sophomore year at UNM, and is working as a manager at a local Hastings book and music store. With schedules as they are, Matt and I haven't had a chance to do any backpacking together since Philmont, but hope to do so before the Summer is over. He is living at home fore the time being, after spending 6 months sharing an apartment with a friend. Matt's turned into a responsible, caring young man. His mom and I are very proud of him! John F. - John is very active with the Troop, and is a Asst. District Commissioner as well. John is working at UNM, and hopes to retire in about 6 years. Otherwise, he is busy keeping up with his 4 kids! Dave B. - Things have changed for me in the past year. I'm not as active with the Troop as I'd like to be, due to a lot of things, including increased activity with a Cub Scout Pack, starting work as a Unit Commissioner, and other District-level jobs. I was in charge of the '97 Spring Camporee for our District, which I started working on last September, and finished in May of '97. I am doing various training sessions this Fall, and should finish my Woodbadge tickets by the end of August, '97. I hope to get back to working with the Troop in the future, if the Scoutmaster will have me back. Ranger Kyle Taylor - Kyle is back at Philmont this Summer. I've kept in contact with him via email. He will be back at Western Georgia College in the Fall. We all wish Kyle the best! There you have it. What I know about our crew a year later. I hope to keep in contact with everyone, and be able to update this area on a regular basis. Now, in the immortal words of Ranger Kyle, "Suck it up, and hike on!"
